Joyce Sherwin’s colourful art glass pieces utilize the ancient techniques of fused glass. Working in her home studio, glass is cut, composed in layers and melted together in the kiln. Often Joyce creates bricks of glass, cuts them into slices with a diamond saw, and incorporates the slices into a piece to create various effects in terms of colour mixing and texture. Crushed glass, sliced glass, glass rods, pot melts, as well as hundreds of small cut pieces of glass can form the foundation of a piece. Typically one piece requires several firings in the kiln starting with melting the bricks, then layering and melting the foundation of the piece, followed by the final slump. In the end, you have an original one-of-a-kind bowl, platter, free-standing art piece, necklace, coaster, votive or another interesting vessel.
Joyce sells her glass art online as well as in the St. Albert Farmers' Market each Saturday from June to mid-October. If you would like to see her art, visit booth #359 on St. Anne Promenade in downtown St. Albert, Alberta.
